NodeWorks Ocean delivers physically accurate, GPU-accelerated ocean simulation directly within 3ds Max-designed to meet the needs of a wide range of artists, from visual effects professionals to architectural visualization specialists. At its core is the Ocean Sim node, which generates high-resolution ocean geometry and drives secondary effects like foam, spray, and bubbles - making it ideal for everything from calm shorelines to stormy, cinematic seas.
The system is built on procedural spectrum-based wave models, using inverse Fourier transforms to recreate the energy distribution across wave frequencies and directions. Multiple Ocean Spectrum nodes can be layered to craft complex wave behavior, while Perlin noise blending introduces smooth spatial variation across the surface-perfect for mixing swells and ripples, or achieving localized effects driven by wind.
For large-scale environments, adaptive meshing ensures efficient geometry generation focused around the active camera view, maintaining detail where it matters most while optimizing performance elsewhere. With tile variation and noise masking, the system eliminates visible repetition across tiled ocean surfaces.
Foam, bubbles, and spray are generated in real-time using dedicated Foam & Spray nodes. These particles are emitted from wave crests and subsurface motion and are rendered efficiently as Arnold points with full support for user data such as age, velocity, and density-allowing custom shading and natural fade-outs.
Dynamic interactions are handled by the Ocean Dynamics node, which simulates ripples, boat wakes, and localized disturbances caused by contact with floating objects. This two-way coupling system ensures that objects influence the water surface and are, in turn, influenced by it-creating a physically accurate interaction model. Wakes can emit foam and bubbles based on intensity and position, enhancing the sense of movement and scale.
Using the Ocean Object node, artists can add scene objects or particle groups into the simulation. Each object can be set as static, kinematic, or fully dynamic-with detailed control over buoyancy, friction, inertia, and wake intensity. Submerged volumes are voxelized for accurate force calculation, and visual debugging tools make it easy to tune object-water interaction.
Every component of the Ocean integrates seamlessly into the NodeWorks environment, enabling procedural control, viewport feedback, and real-time simulation-all while remaining flexible enough to support complex pipelines and large-scale shots.
